Where all-caps text is the right choice
- Headlines and display type. Short headings, posters, and buttons often use capitals for emphasis and visual weight.
- Legal and contractual clauses. Disclaimers and warranty disclaimers are conventionally set in capitals to signal conspicuousness.
- Constants in source code. Configuration keys and environment variables use capitals by convention — though for those you usually want CONSTANT_CASE rather than plain uppercase.
- Forms and labels. Reference numbers, country codes, and ticket IDs are typically stored uppercase so they compare reliably.
A note on readability
Long passages in capitals are measurably slower to read, because we partly recognise words by their outline shape and capitals flatten every word into the same rectangle. Use uppercase for short bursts — a heading, a label, a warning — and keep body copy in sentence case. Online, a full sentence in capitals is also widely read as shouting.
