The format comes from a 2017 image macro pairing a contorted screenshot of SpongeBob SquarePants with alternating-caps text. The uneven capitalisation is read as a mocking, sing-song repetition of whatever someone just said. It spread from Reddit to X and is now standard shorthand for sarcasm across Discord, TikTok comments, and group chats — usually with the SpongeBob picture dropped entirely, because the lettering alone carries the tone.

How the alternation works
The pattern advances only on letters — spaces, digits, and punctuation are passed through untouched and do not consume a turn. That keeps the visual rhythm unbroken across word boundaries, which is what makes the effect read correctly. If you want the opposite emphasis, convert once and then run Inverse Case on the result to flip which letters are capitalised.
